Adnan Sami (Urduعدنان سمیع‎,Hindiअदनान समी) is a singer, musicianpianist,[2][3] actor and composer.[4][5] with a command on Indian and Western Classical/ Semi-Classical notes, Jazz, Rock & Pop music. Born to Naureen and Arshad Sami Khan in LondonUnited Kingdom,[1] he is a Canadian citizen of Pakistani and Indian ancestry and currently works and lives in MumbaiIndia.[6][7][8] Having received his formal training in IndianClassical music from the famous Santoor Maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, his music merges Asian and Western music styles and instrumentation. His career has ranged from Classical Music (Indian and Western) to Jazz to modern Pop-Rock.

Early life and education [edit]

Born in 1969 in LondonEngland, to a Pakistani Pathan[1] father (Arshad Sami Khan) and a mother (Naureen Khan)of Kashmiri ancestry, Sami was brought up as an aristocrat and educated in London, United Kingdom. He is of Pashtun origin. His paternal grand father Mehfooz Jan was the Governor of Herat in Afghanistan from 1912 till the revolution."[1] Adnan’s father, Arshad Sami Khan served 3 Presidents of Pakistan as their Aide-de-Camp; He served 5 Presidents & Prime Ministers of Pakistan as their Chief of Protocol. Arshad went onto become an accomplished Pakistani diplomat having served as Ambassador of Pakistan to more than 14 countries & also as Federal Secretary to the Government of Pakistan. Arshad also had the distinction of being the first Commissioner General of Pakistan. Sami attended Rugby School.[9][10] He was a child prodigy who could play piano at age 5 and composed his first piece of music when he was nine years old.[11][12] Sami began taking lessons from Pandit Shivkumar Sharma when visiting India during his school vacations.[1] Indian singing legend Asha Bhosle spotted talent in a ten-year-old Sami at an R.D. Burman concert in London and encouraged him to take up music as a career.[13][14]
As a teenager, Adnan, when performing on the piano at a TV program in Stockholm, was noticed by the famous U.S. based Keyboard Magazine as being the ‘Fastest man on Keyboard in the World’ & the ‘Keyboard Discovery of the Nineties’.[1] Adnan went on to learn Indian classical music from Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, the Santoor maestro in India.[15] At the age of sixteen, Sami was approached to write a song for famine-hit Ethiopia for which he won a special award from UNICEF.[3]. At the same age he, started a hugely popular music program for children on Pakistan Television, where he was noticed by leading musicians and Pakistani public for the first time.
He graduated from King's CollegeUniversity of London[16] and became the first person to play Indian classical music on the electric piano.
